New Resident Information: Services & Programs

Community Centre Management Committee

The Cardigan Village Community Centre Committee of Management was established by the City of Ballarat to manage the facility on behalf of the local community. It is made up of interested residents and representatives of the City of Ballarat. Elections are held in March each year.

The committee is responsible for the day-to-day management of the facility, including cleaning, and meets the basic running costs of the centre and also conducts and funds community events including the annual community Christmas BBQ and Santa run.

As well as managing the facility, the committee occasionally provides input and advice to council on community views.

A community newsletter is periodically compiled and distributed by the committee.

Community members are invited to join in community events and in particular to attend committee meetings.

Meetings are held at the Community Centre at 7.30 pm on the first Monday each month (except January).  For further information, contact Neil at cvccroom@gmail.com.

New Residents Program

The City of Ballarat invites all new residents to participate in the New Residents Program which consists of a Welcome Booklet and an invitation to attend four new resident functions throughout the year.

The booklet provides information about key services that may assist residents new to Ballarat. It also includes thousands of dollars worth of vouchers that will assist you as you settle into your new home.

Permanent residents of Ballarat who have been living here for less than 3 months are eligible to apply. For more details on eligibility and how to apply contact the City of Ballarat.

 National Broadband Network (NBN)

Cardigan Village and surrounding areas are serviced by the wireless broadband network. Contact your preferred telecommunications provider for more information.

   Public Transport

Three school buses and one V/Line bus (two daily) service the village.

Postal Services

In addition to the normal residential postal delivery services provided by the Australia Post roadside delivery service contractors, residents can leave their outgoing mail for daily collection from their residential mail boxes. The contractors suggest that mail be put in or on their mail box early in the day, and the contractors alerted that there is mail to be collected by means of a coloured ribbon, or other marker. As a precaution, in wet weather enclose the mail in a plastic bag. All other mail services can be accessed at the closest post office in Sturt Street, Alfredton.

Newspaper Delivery

For newspaper delivery contact the paper concerned.

Please note that, at time of writing, there is no Sunday delivery to the Village.

Garbage and Recycling

Weekly garbage (red/dark green lid) and fortnightly recycling (yellow lid) /green waste (light green lid) bins are collected on a Monday morning. Put bins out on Sunday night. On collection day the bin needs to be placed on the kerbside, one metre apart from garbage bins and away from parked cars and trees.

Green Waste Bin

The green waste bins are collected on the same day as your rubbish bins but the opposite week to recycling.

The green waste bins accept anything you cut from your garden. For example, leaves, grass, prunings, weeds, flowers and small branches (maximum size: 10cm in diameter and 55cm long).

The maximum weight for collection is 70kg. If the bins are heavier, they can’t be collected. If you’re concerned about green waste becoming stuck in the bottom of your bin, try putting twigs at the bottom.

Any properties that do not currently have the green waste service can now request to opt-into the service. You can request the service by calling Customer Service on (03) 5320 5500 or emailing info@ballarat.vic.gov.au  attention to City of Ballarat waste team.

Waste and recycling may also be taken to the Transfer Station in Gillies Street South (fees or coupons required).

Used batteries can be dropped off at the Transfer Station, the City of Ballarat Customer Service at 25 Armstrong Street, or any Aldi supermarket.

For more information on these and other waste and recycling opportunities contact the City of Ballarat.

Cardigan / Windermere Fire Brigade

The Cardigan Windermere volunteer fire brigade covers Cardigan Village, Lucas and Windermere as well as assisting neighbouring brigades when required.

The brigade operates from the fire station in Remembrance Drive and its resources include a CFA supplied Hino tanker as well as a quickfill/lighting trailer unit and other equipment purchased with financial support from the community.

Each year the brigade produces a calendar in the community and distributes it as part of fundraising activities.

Members come from all walks of life and the brigade benefits from the varied expertise they bring to the brigade; not just fire fighting, but skills and interests such as equipment maintenance and catering support.

The brigade welcomes new members who wish to become involved in their community.

Appropriate training will be provided to those interested in becoming an active fire fighter.

Meetings are held at the fire station on bi-monthly Wednesday evenings at regular intervals: dates are listed in the calendar. Contact the brigade for details of training and other sessions.
